Eye Cream FAQ:
I have a litter of 2 1/2 week old kittens. One kitten’s eye is constantly closing. I open it with a damp washcloth every few hours. Is he too young to put triple antibiotic cream in {vet kind} ? I have used it on other kittens, but they were at least 1 1/2 months old.
the cream is vet prescribed that consists of neomycin, polymyxin and bacitracin zinc

You would need to talk to you vet about that. I am not an expert, and don’t want to give advice that could be harmful to the kitten.

Is the eye infected/pink? Or did the eyes open recently, and he’s just not able to keep them open for long periods?
If infected, or if you really feel it needs treatment, I’d contact your vet to make sure the ointment is ok for a kitten so young, especially since other kittens in the litter or the mother may simply try to lick it away and end up ingesting it.

Hi. It’s not too soon to put a dab of the veterinary eye ointment in the kittens’ eyes. I have a rescued momma kitty who gave birth to 5 kittens in April. As the kittens’ eyes were beginning to open, there was a little crust and goop in them. I did use the damp cloth, but I also used a slight dab of the Vetropolycin eye ointment on their eyes. Nothing bad happened. The eyes cleared up nicely, and the babies were just fine! It’s safe enough to use, even this early. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly first. Then dab a little ointment on your pinkie. Then wipe it gently over the eye. BUT, be sure to treat both eyes, even if only one is closing/goopy/runny. Good luck!

Call your vet and ask. Always call your vet if you’re not sure. Better safe than sorry. A phone call doesn’t cost anything!

What is vet type triple antibiotic cream? the only reason i am asking is that i am sitting right next a tube of that ointment and it isn’t for ophthalmic use. It is a first aid cream.
The ointment vets usually prescribe for eye infections is TERRAMYCIN OPHTHALMIC OINTMENT , make sure you are using the right stuff for your kittens eyes.
terramycin can be used on kittens that young, just follow the vets instructions, usually two applications a day.

a simple antibiotic ointment made for the eye should be fine but probably best just to keep the eye clean with a warm cloth until you can get it into the vet
